Oh Mexico, can we go back please? We would much rather be sipping drinks on the beach then shovelling snow from our front walkway! I was so excited this year to bring Shannon with me to my parents home in Mexico to pull off the perfect destination styled shoot that we have been talking about for months now. Travel is a huge part of my personal life, but this time it was such an amazing experience take LME away from the pines and bring work to the palms.
Now about this shoot (cue the heart eyed emoji here). Our biggest challenge when we decided to move forward with this design was how do we utilize the location rather than just making the table look like something we could have done anywhere. It was important for us to use what we could get our hands on while we were there rather then bringing in a bunch of decor.
One of my favourite things from Mexico are the assortment of Mexican tiles that exist. All of the detail in these patterns is something that has always drawn me in. We incorporated this into the print work, but we also played on the natural patterns that were surrounding us. For example, all of the local shops were filled with incredible hand made pieces, like the mix of blown glassware and the traditional Mexican figurines we used for the favours/place cards.
If you've ever been to Mexico you know that everywhere you look you are surrounded by lush wild gardens, usually just billowing with bougainvillaea. We knew right away that we wanted to style our bouquet using nothing but white bougainvillaea, creating this wild yet simple arrangement that was completely etherial in every way. To add to that etherial-ness we completed the bouquet with an assortment of trailing ribbons, all of different textures and colours, to really pop.
We set the table in front of a stunning wall of palm plants, with my favourite blue palm - Palmas Azul - in the center. That blue palm was our main focal point, and to really help accentuate it we brought in a few smaller plants that were the same colour and planted them in traditional terracotta planters. The balance of browns + beiges helped display that natural soft look we were going for. Adding a layering of textures with the woven water hyacinth place mats and the striped linen napkins from The Linen Closet, topped with our bamboo boxes, helped give visual depth to the design.
The day itself couldn't have been more perfect, with a strong ocean breeze bringing and the faint sound of waves crashing along the shoreline. The breeze gave a coolness to the evening, which made the candlelit table feel warm + even more inviting, not to mention it gave the trailing ribbons on our bouquet a natural flow that looked like they were dancing with the music.
Our favourite part of the evening though was that we allowed ourselves to enjoy the table for a family dinner, and we even splurged on a few sunset margaritas to toast a successful day and our beautiful surroundings.
